Obligation and permission: must, have to, mustn't, don't have to, can, may

🎯 Po co Ci to? Cztery słowa i cztery różne komunikaty: must (nakaz), mustn't (zakaz), have to (konieczność z zewnątrz), don't have to (brak konieczności). Najczęstszy błąd polskiego ucznia to zrównanie mustn't z don't have to, bo po polsku „nie musisz" i „nie wolno" zaczynają się tym samym „nie".

W kursie: 7.1 (School life), 5.1 (polite requests), 14.2 (Crime and law).

📐 Gramatyka w pigułce — budowa modali

Modal + bezokolicznik bez to, bez końcówki -s, pytanie przez inwersję, przeczenie przez not: She must go. Must she go? She mustn't go. Modale nie mają bezokolicznika ani form przeszłych, więc w innych czasach zastępują je konstrukcje: must → have to (had to, will have to, having to), can → be able to.

📐 Gramatyka w pigułce — obowiązek i jego brak

💭 Pomyśl

💭 Pomyśl: Na drzwiach wiszą dwie kartki: „You mustn't use the lift" i „You don't have to use the lift". Po której z nich możesz jednak wjechać windą?

Sprawdź odpowiedź

Po drugiej. You don't have to use the lift mówi tylko, że winda nie jest obowiązkowa: są schody, wybór należy do Ciebie. You mustn't use the lift to zakaz: winda jest zepsuta albo zarezerwowana i wjazd nią jest złamaniem reguły. Przeczenie modalu nie zawsze neguje to samo, co twierdzenie: must neguje się jako zakaz, a brak obowiązku wymaga innego słowa.
