Ability and possibility: can, could, be able to, may, might

🎯 Po co Ci to? Can to umiejętność i możliwość teraz, could to umiejętność w przeszłości, be able to wypełnia czasy, których modal nie ma (will be able to, have been able to). May i might mówią o prawdopodobieństwie: „może tak, może nie". Egzamin sprawdza, czy odróżnisz could (ogólna umiejętność w przeszłości) od was able to (udało się w konkretnej sytuacji) i czy nie napiszesz will can.

W kursie: 1.2, 8.2, 9.4 [R].

💭 Pomyśl

💭 Pomyśl: „When I was young, I could run 10 km" i „Yesterday I was able to run 10 km". Dlaczego w drugim zdaniu could brzmiałoby dziwnie?

Sprawdź odpowiedź

Bo could opisuje ogólną zdolność w jakimś okresie („umiałem, potrafiłem”), a drugie zdanie mówi o jednorazowym osiągnięciu: wczoraj, konkretnie, udało się. Do pojedynczego sukcesu angielski używa was able to albo managed to. W przeczeniu ta różnica znika: I couldn't run 10 km yesterday jest naturalne.
