Past Continuous · Past Simple vs Past Continuous
W kursie: 5.3 (A trip that went wrong), 10.2 (A match report), 14.2 (Crime and law).
📐 Gramatyka w pigułce — budowa
| Twierdzenie | Przeczenie | Pytanie | |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / he / she / it | I was swimming. | She wasn't listening. | Was he sleeping? |
| you / we / they | They were dancing. | We weren't expecting you. | Were you waiting? |
📐 Gramatyka w pigułce — użycie
| Funkcja | Przykład | Komentarz |
|---|---|---|
| czynność w toku w danym momencie przeszłości | Yesterday at 5 p.m. I was swimming in the sea. | moment podany albo domyślny |
| tło, które przerywa zdarzenie | When we arrived, most of the guests were dancing. | Continuous = tło, Simple = zdarzenie |
| dwie czynności równoległe | She was reading while I was cooking. | while |
| grzeczne pytanie, złagodzenie | I was wondering if you could help me. | utarty zwrot |
📐 Gramatyka w pigułce — kontrast
| Past Simple | Past Continuous |
|---|---|
| When the phone rang, I answered it. (jedno po drugim) | When the phone rang, I was having a shower. (w trakcie) |
| I read the book last night. (przeczytałem całą) | I was reading the book when you called. (byłem w trakcie) |
| It rained all day. (podsumowanie) | It was raining when we left. (tło) |
Zasada: Simple przesuwa akcję, Continuous ją zatrzymuje. Spójniki podpowiadają, ale nie rozstrzygają: po when może stać oba czasy (When I arrived = zdarzenie; When I was walking home = tło), po while prawie zawsze Continuous.
⚠️ Częste błędy polskich uczniów
- ✗ I was see him yesterday. → ✓ I saw him yesterday. (was nie tworzy Past Simple)
- ✗ While I walked home, it started to rain. → ✓ While I was walking home, it started to rain.
- ✗ When she was arriving, we started dinner. → ✓ When she arrived, we started dinner. (zdarzenie, nie tło)
- ✗ I was knowing him well. → ✓ I knew him well. (stan)
💭 Pomyśl
💭 Pomyśl: „When I came home, my brother cooked dinner" i „When I came home, my brother was cooking dinner".
Ten sam when, dwie różne historie.

- I fell asleep while I was listening to / while listening to the lecture. (skrót while + -ing dopuszczalny przy tym samym podmiocie)
🔍 [R] Subtelności: always w przeszłości, was going to, opis sceny
- Past Continuous + always to ta sama irytacja co w Present Continuous, tylko wspominana: My roommate was always borrowing my charger.
- Was / were going to = niezrealizowany zamiar: I was going to call you, but my phone died. Patrz 18.1.
- Opis sceny w opowiadaniu: akapit otwierający wypracowanie narracyjne stawia tło w Past Continuous (The sun was setting, people were leaving the beach), a pierwsze zdarzenie w Past Simple (Then I noticed a small boat). Egzaminator ocenia to jako środki językowe w wypowiedzi pisemnej, patrz 8.4 i 5.5.
- Czasowniki stanu wyjątkowo w Continuous: I was thinking about you (proces), She was being rude (zachowanie, nie cecha).
✍️ [R] Ćwiczenie. Przepisz otwarcie opowiadania tak, by tło stało w Continuous, a zdarzenie w Simple: The band plays. People dance. The lights go out. → At 10 p.m. …
