W drugim. Had better niesie ostrzeżenie: jeśli nie weźmiesz, zmokniesz, i to zaraz. Should to zwykła rada, mogłaby paść przy słonecznym niebie („zawsze warto mieć parasol”). Dlatego had better nie nadaje się do ogólnych zasad, a should tak.

🔍 [R] Subtelności: should jako przypuszczenie, should have jako wyrzut, had better w przeszłości

  • Should = spodziewam się: The parcel should arrive by Friday. (to prawdopodobne, nie: powinna)
  • Should have / ought to have + III forma = wyrzut lub żal o przeszłość: You ought to have washed the glasses before serving the drinks. I should have listened to you. Patrz 20.4.
  • Had better nie ma formy przeszłej. O przeszłości mówi should have: You'd better go now → You should have gone earlier.
  • Propozycje w stylu formalnym: I suggest (that) you bring your own towel. I insist (that) he go home. Tryb łączący: czasownik w formie podstawowej bez -s (informator, poziom rozszerzony; dział 23.3).
