Zero and first conditional · unless, as long as, provided

W kursie: 9.3 (first conditional), 13.1 (conditionals 0, 1, 2), 18.2 (zdania czasowe).

📐 Gramatyka w pigułce

Typ Warunek (if) Skutek Znaczenie Przykład
0 Present Simple Present Simple zawsze, prawo, zasada If you enter the room, an alarm goes off. If you heat ice, it melts.
I Present Simple will + bezokolicznik realna przyszłość If it rains tomorrow, we**'ll stay** at home.

W skutku typu I zamiast will może stać tryb rozkazujący, can, may, should albo be going to: If you see Ania, tell her. If it rains, we can go to the cinema. Kolejność zdań jest dowolna; przecinek stawiamy tylko, gdy zdanie z if jest pierwsze.

📐 Gramatyka w pigułce — spójniki warunku

Spójnik Znaczenie Przykład
unless jeśli nie, chyba że We'll be late unless we leave now. (= if we don't leave now)
as long as / provided (that) / providing pod warunkiem że You can borrow the car as long as you're back by 10.
in case na wypadek gdyby Take an umbrella in case it rains. (nie: jeśli)
when (nie if) gdy coś na pewno nastąpi I'll call you when I get home.

Po wszystkich tych spójnikach o przyszłości mówi Present Simple, tak jak po if.

⚠️ Częste błędy polskich uczniów

  • ✗ If it will rain, we'll stay at home. → ✓ If it rains…
  • ✗ Unless you don't hurry, you'll miss the bus. → ✓ Unless you hurry… (unless już zawiera przeczenie)
  • ✗ Take a coat if it's cold. (miało być „na wypadek”) → ✓ Take a coat in case it's cold.
  • ✗ If you will help me, I'll finish faster. → ✓ If you help me… (wyjątek: If you will help me = jeśli zechcesz, uprzejma prośba; poziom rozszerzony)

💭 Pomyśl

💭 Pomyśl: „I'll buy some water if I get thirsty" i „I'll buy some water in case I get thirsty". Który mówiący kupuje wodę już teraz?

Drugi. In case znaczy „na wypadek gdyby”: kupuję zawczasu, bo pragnienie może przyjść później. If I get thirsty odkłada zakup do momentu, gdy pragnienie się pojawi. Po polsku oba brzmią podobnie, po angielsku to inna kolejność zdarzeń.

🔍 [R] Subtelności: should w warunku, if you will, happen to

  • If + should = mało prawdopodobne, styl formalny: If you should need any help, call this number. Z inwersją: Should you need any help… (dział 24).
  • If you will / would = jeśli zechcesz (uprzejmie): If you would take a seat, the doctor will see you shortly.
  • If you happen to = jeśli przypadkiem: If you happen to see Tom, tell him I called.
  • Present Perfect w warunku podkreśla zakończenie: If you've finished, you can leave.

✍️ [R] Ćwiczenie. Przepisz bardziej formalnie: (a) If you need anything, ask reception. (SHOULD, z inwersją) (b) If you wait here, someone will come. (WOULD, uprzejmie)
